Women United (formerly known as WLC) supports the unique health and human service needs of women and children in Southeast Louisiana. The group pools the time, talent, and financial resources of its members to bring to the forefront the positive impact which women can have on a community.
Founded in 2002, Women United has led the charge on many important issues such as early childhood education, domestic violence reform, and improving the health outcomes of Louisiana’s children. Advocacy and philanthropy are the heart of Women United.
As a Leadership Group of the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, Women United has also supported the transformation process of our United Way over these last few years. Along with staff and partner agencies, Women United is working to direct all allocations to eradicate poverty in our community.
In 2015, the group allocated $25,000 to the ALICE Project. ALICE is an acronym for the Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. ALICE represents Louisiana residents who are working hard, but struggling to afford the basics and make ends meet. The funding will be used to share the important data compiled by the ALICE Research Team.
We know from United Way ALICE Report for Louisiana that nearly half of Louisiana households don't have enough to survive. We know that housing, transportation, childcare, and education costs are too high for many. We know that too many residents are without access to healthcare. We also know that we can help. Together, the women of WLC raise over $200,000 each year through membership dues to be allocated to programs which target those most in need. We are in the business of transforming lives and we hope you will join us!
