While hurricane season starts on June 1, in Southeast Louisiana, our threat heats up in the dog days of summer. So, it’s essential to be prepared through August, September, and even November. Although it's impossible to predict precisely when or where a storm will hit, taking proactive steps to get ready can significantly ease the financial burden of a disaster. Read below for practical ways to bolster your financial resilience during this hurricane season.

Build Your Emergency Fund

One of the most effective ways to prepare for a hurricane is to build an emergency fund. Even small, consistent savings each week can make a big difference. Aim to set aside a little money throughout the year to cover unexpected expenses, such as hotel accommodations if you must evacuate. Even $5 a week from the start of the season can help cover the gas and meals you might need to evacuate to safety. A good rule of thumb is to save at least three to six months' worth of living expenses. Keep this fund in a separate, easily accessible account.

Stock Up Smartly

When grocery shopping, prioritize non-perishable items like dried fruit, canned vegetables, tuna packs, peanut butter, and bread to save money and reduce waste. These items have a longer shelf life and can be a valuable resource if you lose power. Buying meat in bulk will save you money, but it will be the first thing to spoil in your freezer/refrigerator if you lose power. Try to find various recipes that use the same protein to keep meals interesting for you and your family without needing to keep several different types in your home. Our top tip? Ground meat can be used for tacos, spaghetti, burgers, rice bowls, casseroles, and more, and a mixture of sauces can mix up the flavors.

Plan Your Ride

Ensure your vehicle is in good shape by the start of hurricane season. Schedule an early summer check-up to address any maintenance issues, such as worn brakes or low oil. Additionally, start filling up your gas tank regularly from June to November. If you do not own a car, consider making a carpooling plan with friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers. Carpooling will save you money on gas and ensure that you have reliable transportation if your car is damaged during the storm.

While financial preparation is key, a comprehensive emergency plan is equally important. This plan includes knowing your evacuation routes, assembling a disaster supply kit, and staying informed about weather alerts. These steps can increase your financial resilience and protect yourself and your family during hurricane season.
