Living in Southeast Louisiana, we understand that being impacted by a hurricane or heavy storm is not a question of if, but when. It is a fact of life, and we must take the weather seriously – even unnamed storms.
Hurricane season is approaching quickly (June 1-November 30). The first full week of May is earmarked as Hurricane Preparedness Week to bring awareness to the dangers and hazards of tropical cyclones. Take this time BEFORE hurricane season to create a plan for your household and start collecting supplies.
Check out this list of websites with tools, tips, planning worksheets, and apps to get storm-ready.
1. United Way of Southeast Louisiana
Bookmark UWSELA’s Disaster Resources webpage on all of your devices. This page has checklist of tasks to prepare your home and emergency kit necessities. You will also find direct links to parish government websites for local disaster updates.
2. National Hurricane Center
The National Hurricane Center website, hurricanes.gov, provides information on every aspect of weather, including analysis, forecasts, data, and educational resources. Be sure to check out the “Daily Themes” column of their Hurricane Preparedness page for daily topics to consider during Hurricane Preparedness Week, such as developing an evacuation plan, assembling supplies, and helping your neighbor.
3. Ready.gov
The “Make a Plan” hub at ready.gov hosts a long list of helpful downloads, including information for pet owners and what to do before, during, and after a hurricane.
4. Red Cross
United Way partner Red Cross also offers great tools (including an app!) for making an emergency plan. Want to get the kids involved? Find tips from Red Cross for engaging children in disaster planning here.
Current technology can help predict the track of a storm and the probability of where it may make landfall. However, there is a lot to consider when determining a plan for how to keep you and your family safe. Know what you need to do now to prepare and how you should do it. Proactivity is the key to mitigating disaster and loss.
United Way is here to help before, during, and after the storm. But we sure hope you won’t need us – because you’re properly prepared, of course.
