I want to extend my deepest gratitude for your support of the 2024 Tocqueville Gala - what a night of celebration, reflection, and inspiration. For the last century, United Way of Southeast Louisiana has created positive, lasting change – united in a movement for the common good. Through partnerships and a commitment to change, we've advanced health, education, financial stability, and resilience, always leading with compassion.
It was truly humbling to see so many passionate and committed leaders together – long-time supporters, like Drew Marsh, Entergy Chair of the Board and CEO, who accepted this year's "Most Tocqueville Society Members" award, Centennial Workplace Champions, Tocqueville Society Members, donors, board members, advocates, volunteers, and staff. Each of you has played and continues to play an integral role in shaping our shared legacy.
Congressman Troy Carter acknowledged our legacy and presented UWSELA with a Centennial Proclamation that will be housed in Library of Congress – for all time. Thank you to our Leadership Vision Panel for joining me on stage to share the good news about United Way, where we've been, and where we're going. Thank you, Gina Swanson, WDSU Reporter, for serving as our enthusiastic emcee – she truly illuminated the stage. I'd like to extend a special thanks to our Voices of Hope, three program participants who represent the heart and soul of our work at United Way. Jenna, a Families Moving Forward participant, shared her journey and story of impact.
"Shelter staff gave me an application for United Way's IDA program, which offered matched savings to people willing to put forth the effort of saving for things like a vehicle, a down payment on a home, or even help with Christmas. I was given tools, resources, and education on the best way to navigate my debt and lower it—something I had previously seen as impossible. My family still faces challenges and struggles, but there is more stability for us now. United Way changed our life's direction with help from all of you. To everyone who has donated and believed in the United Way, I am here to say thank you from me and my boys."
UWSELA has evolved from providing basic necessities to families in need to tackling complex social issues like financial instability, education gaps, and systemic inequities so we can address the root causes of poverty and build stronger, more equitable communities. As we look to the future, there are many ways to get involved. In the words of Board Chair Ron McClain, "As we move forward, I invite each of you to continue being part of this incredible journey. There are so many ways to get involved. Give - Your investment in United Way uplifts communities everywhere, improving lives today and helping build a more just tomorrow. Volunteer - Your time and talents make a profound difference in advancing our mission. Advocate - Use your voice to champion the causes that matter most and help us shape the future of Southeast Louisiana."
Thank you for your continued support. Together, we are creating a brighter future where everyone can thrive.
Sincerely,
Michael Williamson
